Get Started with the Hold Serve App

 

First a word about data…

The Hold Serve app includes a stand alone iPhone app and stand alone Apple Watch app. Neither app retains data nor do they synchronize their data.

Can I use the apps during a match?

Hold Serve is designed to be used by the player for match training and may not be allowed in competition.

How do I enter data in the iPhone App?

Designed to be used by coaches during a match or by coaches and players while viewing video

After each service point, tap the appropriate button:
If first serve is in:

  • Touch “Ace” if an Ace

  • Touch “Won” if point was won

  • Touch “Lost” if point was lost

  • If first serve was out:

    • Touch “Second” and then:

      • Touch “Ace” if an Ace

      • Touch “Double Fault” if a double fault

      • Touch “Won” if point was won

      • Touch “Lost” if point was lost

How do I know my iPhone app recorded my result?

Check the game score to ensure the app recorded the serve accurately

  • If you press the wrong button, touch “All Serves” and swipe left the incorrect entry, press delete, and press “Done” is upper right hand corner.

    • The score may not be accurate if deleted points are more than just the latest serves in the current game. If this occurs, touch “Reset Score” at the beginning of the next game.

When do the colors change?

Colors of probability will change to green if changing tactics is warranted, and light gray if no change is recommended.

  • The color change will occur after 12 first serves and 12 2nd serves have been recorded.

How do I reset the statistics?

Touch “New Match” to erase all recorded serves and start fresh

How does Hold Serve actually help me hold serve?

At your change over, scroll down and tap “Check Strategy” to view your chances of winning the next service point.
Chance of winning the next point if you hit a “1st Serve” on your 2nd attempt vs. your standard 2nd Serve win percentage.
This percent takes into account the expected increase in double faults.
Chance of winning the next point on your 1st attempt by hitting a “2nd serve” vs. your standard “1st Serve” percentage.
This percent is “2nd Serve In Win %” and therefore does not include double faults to make it consistent with the “1st Serve In” win %.

How do I enter data in my Apple Watch?

After each service point, tap the appropriate button:

1st Won = Your first serve went in and you won the point
1st Lost = Your first serve went in and you lost the point
2nd Won = Your first serve was out and you won the point
2nd Lost = Your second serve went in and your lost the point
Double = Your first and second serves were out

How can I confirm the app recored my result?

Check the game score after pressing the won/lost/double button

What if I press the wrong button?

Scroll down and click “Undo Last”
If you undo more serves than are recorded in the current game, the score will not reflect the current game score
When the next game starts, click “Reset Score”

Why do the percentages change color?

Since data is not saved, can I save my result?

Take a screen shot of the old stats (click crown and side button simultaneously) before you reset so you can compare results later.

  • If you have decided to change your strategy, reset your statsistics so they reflect your new strategy.

  • You have won 17 of your 25 first serve points:

    • Won Point = 68%

    • First Serve Out = 7 (28%)

    • Win Point % when 1st Serve is in = 94+%

  • You have won 2 of your 7 second serve points with no double faults:

    • Win Point = 28+%

    • Lost Point = 71+%

    • Double Faults = 0

  • Percentage chance of winning the point on the 14 expected second serves in two scenarios: (based on 50 service points)

    • Standard Second Serve = 4 (28+%)

      • Expected Double Faults = 0

      • Lost Points = 10

    • Serve your aggressive First Serve = 9 (68%)

      • Expected Double Faults = ~ 4 (28%)

      • Lost Points = 5
